Cala
here. I'd rather be in my recently relocated pond because it's hotter
(and more humid) than anything has a right to be. But no, I can't.
Because
Ryuu's inability to come up with not-garbage names burns more than
the heat. Between that and the aforementioned revolting temperatures,
my pond was boiling. And as I don't feel like turning into a literal
tasty snack? I decided it was time to crawl out of the water yet
again.
So our subject today, as mentioned, is Ryuu's inability to name anything, anyone or anywhere. This has been covered before. Hell, he's done this so much we've had to cover it a couple of times.
But
since those posts were made, there's been some names he's chosen that
have set the bar at an all-time low. Even by his extremely
low standards, these are just awful.
Not
so long ago, I was reading the descriptions on some of his deviations
then came to one that horrified me beyond speech. About Rabies. Rebé.
Same thing. I'm pretty sure I've made my views on her clear before,
so I won't restate those. But I thought the fact that she has the
word 'angel' in her surname was bad enough, because really dude?
That's cheese-tastic. But let's take a look and see, shall we?
[...] But she knew she didn't have any way to impress him among the others, so she devised a plan to find where Sabé went with that man, knowing what them having a child could mean. [...] Sadly, the raid struck in Shantiosia. Houses and property were ablaze, homes searched and items stolen as they went through. One found the four-year-old Rebé, terrified of the events. Sabé and Justiis tried their best to keep their girl--
WHOA,
HOLD THAT THOUGHT.
JUSTIIS?!
ARE YOU YANKING ME?!
YEP,
HER FATHER IS CALLED FUCKING JUSTIIS. WHY IN THE HELL
WOULD YOU DO THAT?
“Okay,
Cala,” you say. “He named a really minor character something
absolutely idiotic. Don't we all do that at least once?” Well, yes,
but if this was a one-off thing we wouldn't have two prior posts
about Ryuu's lack of naming skills, now would we?
The
problem here is that this is clearly not the only instance of
this, nor is it confined only to minor characters. If you read the
previous posts, you know that Ryo's already been covered. Sadly, we
still have a load more where that came from.
Another
major character of his with a pretty terrible name? Crosshair.
Whose
full name is Samantha-Rei Nebulus Dark. No, that's not a joke and
yes, that does sound like she should be the best friend of Enoby
Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way from My Immortal.
The
origin of the name in Ryuu's own words :
[…] After some years, new inspiration struck me. Actually, it was thanks to ~furan-san's gallery. A picture of Rei Ayanami was on there. I hadn't a clue who she was, but I liked the style of suit. […] Liking the name (and Rei, Sailor Mars, being my favorite Sailor Scout when I was little) I added that to her, making her Samantha-Rei. […] Another innovation was made, however, using Perfect Dark's theme for Crosshair for a while. At the end of the mp3 track, a guy says "Goodnight Miss Dark". So, guess what was Crosshair's new last name? I then added her middle name "Nebulus" since she's in space all the time. "Samantha-Rei Nebulus Dark" was her final name.
…
I...
…
Okay. Listen up, doods. Nebulus is
not an actual scientific term. It's not even a word.
I can't say for sure as I'm not Ryuu (thank
fuck for that!),
but the word he was probably looking for?
IS
SPELLED NEBULOUS.
WHY
DOESN'T ANYONE IN RYUU'S CIRCLE OF BS KNOW HOW TO USE
SPELLCHECK?
…
We'll come back to Ryuu making up
words in a sec. Why? Well, I'm gonna dissect the full name, and we'll
start with Samantha. In the journal linked, he says her name was
originally 'Samantha Array'.
Which
is clearly a ripoff of the name of the main protagonist in Metroid,
Samus Aran.
Hate
to break it to you, Ryuu, but we can still clearly tell you ripped
off Samus's name. If you were really serious about putting work into
her, you would've scrapped the first name. Completely. Find a name
that suits her and isn't a ripoff. There's all kinds of sites you
could use for that, like babynames.com or Behind the Name.
As
for Rei...
NO.
NO. BAD RYUU. BAD. She is not Japanese or of
Japanese descent. She's not even a member of a culture that is more
or less the equivalent to Japanese like... I dunno, the Shinigami in
Bleach or the ninja of the village of Mizuho in Tales of Symphonia.
Therefore, SHE SHOULDN'T HAVE A JAPANESE NAME.
After
doing some research, it looks like there is a Japanese-named
character in Metroid but if your character would be called Samantha
Dark and is not multiracial? You probably shouldn't have a
Japanese name in there. You can't just lift names, stick them in a
culturally-inappropriate situation and expect people not to call you
on it.
Don't
even get me started on the double-barrelled first name. Unless you're
just being mean to a character (and I'm sure this is a shock to Ryuu
in all of his character-coddling glory, but some of us are), there is
no need AT ALL for a double-barrelled first name.
I've
already touched on Nebulus. But I'm probably going to have to say
this anyway: Nebulus's not a word, which means it's definitely
not a name. I know next to nothing about Metroid, but doing some
research shows that most of the human characters in the series have
Western names.A brief look at the human category on the Metroid Wikia shows that most people have names like Adam Malkovich, James Pierce,
and Anthony Higgs. These are (at the bare minimum) fairly
common Western names. You can't just pull something outta your ass
and expect it to blend in, but you can definitely expect people to
call you on it if it's that clear you haven't done the research.
So
that just leaves us with Dark... I really shouldn't have to explain
this but guys? That is an adjective. In the vast majority of cases,
that is not a name. If no one else in your universe of choice has
adjectives for names? Your character shouldn't have an adjective for
a name. Also, I know nothing about Perfect Dark. But according to Martin Hollis, the original director of the series:
And why was that picked? In
part:
[…] ... Fourthly, Jeanne d’Arc is a strong female icon in history, vulnerable, feminine and yet capable of killing multitudes. [...]
I actually don't have a problem with this. It's an homage to a strong woman who defied convention and cultural norms and who actually existed (which makes it highly ironic that Ryuu ripped Joanna Dark's name for another one of his troupe of Sues). It is not a
straight rip. That said, the name is still inappropriate for the
Metroid-verse, and it's usually a pretty good idea to name according
to the naming conventions of the universe, country and ethnic group
your character belongs to.
But
wait, there's more! While I was writing this, I was also talking to our Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way, who dug up something interesting that details Crosshair's backstory a bit:
[...] She was third in a family of five kids and both parents. [...] The eldest, Jacob, was dad's pride and joy as he did the things every boy dream of, being great at athletics and getting the high grades. The older sister, Meredith, was miss perfect, being an excellent cook, decorator and being beautiful. The twins, Anna and Jamie, were both the babies of the family, getting a lot of attention. [...]
Let's
ignore the sexism and 'WOMEN MUST ALWAYS BE PRETTY AND DOMESTICATED.
AND MEN CANNOT BE FEMININE EVER' for a bit. As much as I'd like to
dwell on that, that isn't what this post is about. My point is very
simple:
IF
YOUR CHARACTER HAS SIBLINGS CALLED JACOB, MEREDITH, ANNA AND JAMIE,
YOUR CHARACTER WILL NOT HAVE A MARY SUE-CLASS
YOONIQUE NAME.
Seriously,
the siblings' names actually seem to fit in pretty well with the
pre-existing names. Crosshair's, however, does NOT. At all.
(Bonus
fact: her Metroid-ripoff counterpart's name is Volvox. I MISREAD THAT
AS VULVA TWICE, GUYS. Just a tip for character
creators: Say the name aloud the way you want it pronounced. If it
sounds like genitals, drugs or some heretofore undiscovered sex act,
CHANGE THE NAME. I shouldn't have to explain this either, but
clearly I DO.)
Things
are gonna reach a new level of suck at this point, so a disclaimer.
I'd suggest people with a low stupid tolerance look away now, because
I'm not responsible for what happens to you if you don't.
See,
Ryuu has a character called Envvi Skorm, which is a pretty damn awful
name in and of itself. She is a ripoff of Veran from Zelda: Oracle of
Ages who steals Ryo and tries to seduce him. Then fails, because he's
so in wuv with his special sweetie schnookiewookums Queen Zelda.
Which is, of course, nauseatingly Mary Sueish.
From
the description on his sketch 'Envvi Skorm Redux [sic]':
A long time ago in the land of Termina, even before the age of Clocktown, the Ikana Kingdom ruled the land from the desert canyon province, Igos Du Ikana as the king. His wife and Queen of Ikana had one thing unfortunate in her life - being sister to a woman by the name of Maalis. Maalis made many attempts to kill her sister and try to become queen, herself. But all her efforts proved futile.
…
MAALIS.
MAALIS. JUST... SERIOUSLY, RYUU? I DON'T...
WHY!?
…
Breathe, Cala. Breathe. Okay. Gonna
start this off with saying A CHARACTER DOESN'T NEED TO BE ROYALTY TO
BE INTERESTING, RYUU. Seriously, count how many high ranking
nobles/royal characters he has. Now count how many of them are
actually interesting. Clearly, he's missed the point completely.
And
now... Maalis. If you don't get it? Say it aloud. Sounds like Malice,
right? COULD YOU BE ANY MORE OBVIOUS, RYUU?
There's
subtle symbolism and then there's beating you upside the head with
it. This is definitely the latter.
Well,on
with the show:
Maalis's daughter, Verchu, disliked how her mother was behaving. She learned of her mother's attempts of assassination, and instead of following her example, she attempted to bring peace to the two families.
…
FUCKING VERCHU. THAT LOOKS LIKE SOME SORT OF
MUTATED FUCKING POKEMON.
"What?
Your Raichu was exposed to toxic motherfucking waste! Raichu is now
evolving! Congratulations! Your Raichu evolved into Verchu! Watch out
for the radioactive claws!”
But
that isn't all of it. Oh no. Nonono. Did you really think I'd be nice
enough to let it stop there? … Wait, you did? Well, that was silly
of you. Flattering, but silly.
Maalis was enraged, when she found out, but did nothing for Verchu was pregnant. If her daughter was hopeless, then her grandchild would have to do... Verchu soon gave birth to a daughter. She was named Kyndnace. Maalis knew her time was now. She personally destroyed her own daughter and brought the grandchild Kyndnace into her own care. She didn't like the name of this new baby, so instead Maalis named her Envvi.
…...
KYNDNACE.
KYNDNA--- PLEASE KEEP HITTING ME UPSIDE THE HEAD WITH SHITTY,
PAINFULLY OBVIOUS SYMBOLISM, RYUU. GO ON, I DON'T MIND. I ACTUALLY
LOVE IT.
So,
if you've missed why these names are so awful? Say 'em aloud.
That's
right! HE CALLED THEM MALICE, ENVY, VIRTUE AND KINDNESS.
ERFVSREBVEFACHKDW!
I
don't even need to explain why this is fucking dumb, do I? I don't
think so. If you can't understand why this is fucking stupid, go
punch yourself in the face as hard as you can. Sooner or later you'll
either get it or black out.
My
final thought here, which has nothing to do with names but is also
part of Envvi's backstory:
[...] Their efforts angered Igos, who was quick to discover who had done it, to the extent of banishing them from Ikana to the highest reaches of the SnowHead region, their punishment being to freeze to death. [...]
If
he's in the canyon, how the fuck is he supposed to enforce this
judgment? How the hell is he supposed to stop them from wandering off
to, like... Clock Town or Great Bay or something?
HE
CAN'T. HE CAN'T UNLESS HE SACRIFICES A BUNCH OF HIS PEOPLE TO KEEP AN
EYE ON THEM. … And knowing Ryuu, that's exactly what happened as
he's shown signs of being a sadistic jerk. To the degree
where I think he really needs to see a therapist.
There's
logic, then there's Ryuu logic. And the latter scares the hell out of
me.
Excuse me ... can I ask a few questions about this blog?
ReplyDeleteIf you've read our faq already, then sure.
DeleteI did and now I am ready :)
DeleteI want to start I am no Ryu fan, but I simply think there are people who deserve worse.
I wanted to know... aside from your distaste about Ryu, have you bonded over something else or tried to make something... bigger, let's say, than (rightfully) bashing the equivalent of SMeyer of Zelda fics? As in make awesome fics or something else?
Second is, how did exactly the failblog start? I mean, was there something which triggered you all and say 'We should make a blog about his fail'?
Third, what was the post which was the most fun to you to write about?
Lastly, have you ever thought about dissing other Suethors aside from Ryu?
Sorry, I am simply interested :)
Hey, hope you don't mind me giving my own answers here. Since they're probably going to be pretty different from Rinku's and all.
Delete- Yeah, I'd say we absolutely do have things we've bonded over besides calling Ryuu out on his bullshit. And while I do a lot of writing, most of it is cluttering up my hard drive. At the end of the day I kind of panic about posting my original writing, haha.
- I actually was not here when the blog started, so I can't answer that. I can tell you what caused me to end up contributing, though.
I'm friends with a couple of people who know him reasonably well, and as a result, I've been aware of his bullshit for some time. He's a homophobe, a sexist and has shown signs of being vaguely racist here and there.
And, believe it or not, that's not even what pushed me over the edge. That would be the fact that he treats everyone from his girlfriend to his watchers on DA like crap. And I can't stand people who take advantage of their friends like that. It makes me sick, as if the bigotry didn't do that enough.
- It's actually this post! Once I was able to stop the disbelieving cackles, anyway. I had a lot of fun with this one.
- I've done some of it on my WordPress, though I prefer to mock things MST-style if they have really crappy writing.
Sues make it easier for me to mock, but I'm more focused on boring/just plain BAD writing and screwing over canon, really.
I abslolutely don't mind. I wished to get everyone's impressions :) I was even about to ask another pair of questions, but luckily there is the FAQ.
Delete- Hmmm.... okay, now, I hate to be the Devil's Advocate, for I think Ryu is still an horrible writer who tried to hide his weaknesses under a pretentiously verbous style and failing miserably (thanks for MSTing 'Attack upon Kakariko', btw)... but there are two things which irks me.
One is his accusation of sexism. I know, I read over both your MST and several of his profiles, but I don't know how much this is 'sexism' or 'bad writing'. I mean, I compared him to SMeyer, I will do it again. Twilight is sexist, and there are lots of moment we could show for this. But I doubt SMeyer herself is racist as much as she tried to replicate the fantasies of the average 13 year old girl. Has Ryuu done something which shows him to be explicitely sexist and not simply falling into bad sterotypes due to the abysmall writing?
Same for his jerkassery. I did call him out on Envvi looking like Veran, he admitted it was true, explained it was becaus he had an Onox look-alike (No comment) and that she evolved from her original looks, facts which are all true. I talked with him and not for a bit he seemed to be an a-hole. A moron at his worst, but not malicious.
Have I missed something which outed these true colors. As I am a notvice to the Ryuu situation, I don't want to comment without looking biased
- HELL YEAH, frankly enough I loved it too :)
And I see....
Btw, another question which irks me and you all might know better
- Why is Ryuu, in your opinion, so popular?
Frankly enough, when I saw his drawings for the first time and all the backstory, I could not help but sweratdrop and laugh at its Sue-ness. Yet he has a quite sizeable fanclub. Why, in your opinion?
--------
Sorry if I sound rude, but I just want to understand more of how this failblog works ^^ Although you make quite the amusing posts I love to read :)
You don't sound rude at all, and thank you for taking the time to read the blog and comment!
Delete- As much as I'd love to just write it off as him being a dweeb, there's a pattern of sexism in his work. In, for example, that ArchAngel Zelda picture, he's written...
"ArchAngel Zelda, in future times, is a symbol of love, beauty, innocence and purity. She's also a symbol of a loving, submissive wife. Also in future times, Fire Deity Ryo is a symbol of strength, victory, bravery and perseverance. In the home, he's a symbol of a strong and senseful leader."
This is reeking of “GET YOUR BUTT BACK IN THE KITCHEN, THE MEN WILL TAKE CARE OF IT!”, really.
Then about his actual girlfriend on the picture Happy Hallow's Eve 2010, he says, "She's very supportive, submissive, gentle, affectionate and sweet".
Nothing about any of Lady-Zelda's good personality traits other than the vague 'affectionate', just that she's very pretty. Oh, and she's submissive.
Out of everything he could'a said about her (and from my experience, there is a decent bit good to say), he chooses that?
All of his and his girlfriend's female characters seem to exist only to supplement his. When was the last time he drew one doing something besides looking 'sexy' or getting kidnapped or needing protection? He turned Princess Zelda into a doormat.
Also, a friend did an article on why Crosshair is sexist on the 16th of June. http://zelda-epicfailure.blogspot.com/2012/06/ryo-genesis-evangelion-10-you-are-not.html
In the piece of art Ebony drew on for that article, he says, in short, that women are 'Miss Perfect' if they decorate and can cook well, says that guys are 'every father's dream' if they get good grades and play sports, implies that women can't serve as soldiers because they're 'only girls', implies girls only have value if they're pretty, etc., etc.
If that's not sexist, I dunno what is.
I also did a post on his Nabooru ripoff way, way back. As it's two years old, here's the link to that one if you're interested: http://zelda-epicfailure.blogspot.com/2010/09/ryuus-sexism-entry-1.html
The long and the short of that one is that he takes a woman from a tribe of thieves extremely skilled in combat and turns her into a stripper. She's supposedly a great swordswoman, but... She just basically wiggles her butt and then her Gohma buddy crushes people.
Also, no, he wouldn't come across as a jackass in public. He's pretty good about that. Problem is, he's come across as a douche in private big-time. He outright stated at one point while corresponding with the Doctor that he didn't know 'what you want me to say', so clearly, this is all just lip service to him.
I don't necessarily think he intends to be malicious but the fact remains he's said some pretty revolting things in regards to the LGBT community, has thinly veiled sexism all over the place and is completely unable to understand why we're upset, really.
Or what our problems with his characters are.
Or the fact that he whines and cries about not being able to afford a ten dollar fucking sketchbook while commissioning a buttload of pieces from the artist Felsus, each of which costs $20 to $35 USD, as best as I can tell.
Thank you so much, yet again! I love to know my work is getting read and more importantly for me, that it's being enjoyed, haha. To answer your last question, I have no clue, in all seriousness. As best as I can figure out, though, it's because he SEEMS friendly.
And because, you know, he draws half naked people with crappy anatomy. High schoolers eat that up, haha.
And in all probability, there's likely some muscle inflation fetishists who support his crap. Though I don't know anyone who's genuinely liked his writing... That's a mystery, haha.
I see some point of what you say. I don't think he is consciously sexist. That what he says it's sexist... no doubt, after you gave me those prooves (had he bothered to point out at least he came from a sexist family). I was not bothered because I thought the family itself (and not the author) was sexist.
DeleteAnd yeah, Rebè. I admit it was through here I met Ryuu's account.
I can't defend him on the homosexuality. I read his rule. And frankly enough, it irks me as well that he can't see what's wrong, or pretends not to, at least.
I just think sometimes you (I don't mean you Calamareye, but you all) ends up crossing occasionally the line of 'We explain why Ryu is a bad writer' to 'OMG Ryu sneezed he is a prick'. Of course, I have not read the whole blog (although I had read already the post you sent me). Alas, with his site taken down, I can't read much of what he did. A shame. I get giggles out of bad writing... For example, I had found a story where Link fell for a MALE child prostitute he affictionately call 'whore' (No, not kidding, I can send the link XD). I simply... laugh at that.
Frankly enough, I love how Ryu puts so much detail in his profiles. He gives me a lot to deal with :) IAlso, it shows that he somewhat TRIES, instead of some who makes oneliners and call it a day. I prefer the purple prose to one lacking details. Not to say, a purple prose DONE WELL (like Lovecraft) it's a joy to the eye :3 . Of course, Ryuu is more akin to Meyer or Paolini than Lovecraft >.>...
But I understand overall what you mean. I was simply wondering why you were so hostile. Not on a critique way, the OCs and the part of the story FULLY deserve it (although I have to say, the naming theme you posted was hilariously amusing XD)
Sorry for taking a bit to reply. My network was down. Cala, thanks for answering in the meantime!
Delete--Yes, we have other goals and interests besides making a failblog about Ryuu. I'm practicing art most of the time, which is why a lot of my posts that aren't LGBT-related focus on Ryuu's shitty art. Doc's been pursuing offline stuff for a while now. Cala has a career she's working toward. This blog is hardly our magnum opus and it's not the only thing we talk about.
--It wasn't really one thing that prompted us, more like a perfect failstorm that we realized was viably mockable. He's such a clusterfuck of bad art/writing/RPing, rampant bigotry, creative thievery, and shitty attitude, and it kept coming and coming without end, so we felt we needed a place to snark without worrying about him censoring us. I don't remember exactly when the tipping point was, just that we decided his shit could actually support a blog.
--The Lizalfos one was the most fun, I think. Really, any of them where I was allowed to cut loose instead of pretending to be "civil".
--We've sporked several people, actually, though Cala's the only one who posts anything. We haven't found anyone else yet who warranted an entire blog. I've got some non-Ryuu one-shots in the works, but I won't be posting them here.
--Ryuu's sexism is evident in the shit he draws/writes and the attitude he holds regarding the women he knows. He has certain ideas about what a "good" woman entails, how they should act, how their minds function, what their "proper" role is (especially compared to him and his male characters), and those ideas come out as really shitty sexist stereotypes in his stories/pictures/RPs. He's a textbook example of Tradish'nul Gendurr Rols where the man calls all the shots and the woman is there to look pretty and make babies and cook his dinner and damn it she's going to like it. If he didn't hold sexist ideals, he wouldn't write ALL his women as shitty sexist stereotypes that do little more than prop up his male characters.
--He's got enough sense not to snip at his followers, unless they do something he really doesn't like (like, say, NOT giving his characters fawning praise). His jerkassery comes in mostly when he feels like he's entitled to something, or when he feels like stroking his ego, or when he wants to be a bigot. People who knew him personally know full well the bullshit he pulls on a regular basis. Basically, he seems to think that life is about how everyone else should be going out of their way to do what he wants and to make sure he's happy, with no obligation from him to put forth any effort for anyone else.
--I actually have no idea why he's so popular. I'm pretty sure most of the people who like his stuff are young and easily impressed, and his friends are doing it mostly out of pity or something. Probably the same reason why Tom Preston is so popular despite the fact that his art stinks.
--It doesn't matter if he's "consciously" sexist, or if it's because he was raised to be sexist, he's still OVERTLY sexist in a way that harms women, and he needs to cut it out if he wants to be among civilized human beings.
Delete--We're rather irked that he took his forum down, too, despite the fact that he seems to think we delight in it. I'm not sure how we've posted anything about him as innocuous as a sneeze, though. If you're implying that we're picking at piddly shit just to snark at him for snarking's sake, I highly disagree.
--This is, of course, a matter of opinion. We find his overuse of detail really tedius and boring, especially since he tends to repeat himself a lot, and he focuses way too much on superficial things like appearances and clothing, instead of shit like personality and motivation and stuff that actually makes a good character. He seems to fixate on superficial things in general, probably because it's easier to bullshit it when you only put two seconds of thought into it. And then he acts like he's some fucking genius. Barf.
--We're "hostile" because ridicule is the only way to get through to a person who has their head so far up their ass and yet thinks their shit doesn't stink. We've tried "nice" with him. It didn't work. Plus, it feels better to be sincere about our feelings than to pretend to be civil and polite to someone who basically thinks we're subhuman scum, too unpleasant for him to even acknowledge, and that we should hide away and disappear and then burn in Hell when we die.
I see.
ReplyDeleteNo, don't misunderstand me. I know you have social lives, i asked if you had something else TOGETHER besides this blog, because I love sites of critiques :) I was simply interested in more aside from Ryu ^^
Or see works of people who DO know what they are doing. Don't misunderstand, I wish not to snark nor to criticize you... quite the opposite.
I, as an outsider and not one who frequented much Ryu's work, wanted to fully understand how such failblog worked (and how I didn't discover it sooner >.> DAMN, I wanted to find it first)
I actually think you don't snark for snark's sake, but sometimes to .... newborn readers who have no idea (like me), it could come across as such. I had already read things of Ryu, so I had seen what kind of Suethor he was.
I don't like his style, I don't like his rip offs.... I mean, characters (for my fics, I use the canons :P), I don't judge his drawings because I am way worse than him, but I realize it looks like a worse version of Liefield (really, man, tone down the muscles)
I simply commented what I saw, that's it :) I apologize if I sounded offensive ^^
Also.... might I one day contribute?
Ohh, I see! Sorry for the snippiness, then. We've been accused of that more than once, so it's sort of a force of habit. No, there's nothing big that we've created together. Sometimes I'll comment at Cala's place, but I don't think that counts. Our creative efforts are kept mostly private. Maybe that'll change in the future, I don't know. If you want some nice work, that link to the left for ConceptArt.Org has some really great stuff in it, including art instruction.
DeleteHow did you find the failblog, anyway, if I may ask? We've been getting a lot of traffic lately, and not from the usual places (i.e. people searching for armor parts).
Ahh, yeah, I can see how that might be, if they only read a few posts here and there. Hopefully that'll change with more content, but there's probably something else we can do about it, too. Maybe I can make earlier notable posts more easily accessible...
Hahaha, Liefeld, yes! I'm actually really surprised that Liefeld isn't one of his influences. They'd get along really well. (Yay for canon characters! Using the canons just makes more sense, why the hell would I want to read a ZELDA story about someone's OC when I'm looking for stories about Link and Zelda and the other characters I already love? I mean, really, there's making OC secondary characters or RP characters, and then there's "Here's my story about how my mary-sue self-insert does everything that Link does, only better! PLZ R&R" Boooring.)
Don't worry about it, you're free to opine about us, even if we might disagree with it. If we are doing something genuinely egregious, we'd like to know about it... and if we're doing good, we like to know about that, too, heh. I'm snippy and opinionated, but I do take critique into consideration so long as it isn't just "Waaah you're mean to Ryuu, I don't like your tone, why can't you gay people shut up!"
Actually, Cala has an e-mail posted here for reader submissions. I'm not really sure what sort of submissions she's looking for (to be honest, we haven't really established a policy about it yet), but it's something I can discuss with her. Glad to hear you're interested, though!
I saw on the FAQ that answer. I apologize as well if that sounded like an insinuation about your lack of not about your private life.
DeleteI see... a shame, I would love to read that :)
And indeed, you post a lot of things which do hold up together, but they are so distant sometimes I have to jump from the far 2009. Also, I find more than once also series of discussion which finished quite soon(for example, the excellent "Ryu and Sexism" series from Cal, which alas finished after the first entry)
Now, the part about OC is... arguable. Yes, there is a LOT of chances that an OC as a main character might turn into an sue, but, through efforts, you CAN try and make him balanced. Of course, then you have to put twice the efforts in making him likeable AND in letting the story keep the original flavor of the fandom you take.
According to few people who reviewed my fic, I succeeded .... however, even Ryu has his fans, so you are never quite sure >.>
Well, my only critique, if I will ever make one is: the purpose of this fail blog is to call/criticize Ryu, not to insult him. As of now, you are keeping in mind this purpose, so everything plays out well. But I would never support a mediocre Suethor like Ryu, and the evidences you and Cal brought me about his sexism and jerkassery are.... enough
And I was looking for 'Zelda Mary Sue' on google ^^ , She-Elf's critique to Ryu was among the first results. As I had seen Ryu's artwork while searching pics of Gerudos, and run into Rebè, I remembered all of this and started reading, amused that I had found people who shared my thoughts about his main OC being a Sue ^^
Thanks :)
No problem, don't worry about it.
DeleteAhh, I see what you mean. You definitely raise a few excellent points! Yeah, we will have to do something about that, certainly. Thanks for that!
Well, I don't mean that an OC protagonist is necessarily a sue, though many of them are, but that it's kind of boring to read about in fanworks, where people presumably want to read about particular characters. When I go looking for Zelda fanart, I don't want to read about some guy I don't know doing the things Link does, I wanna read about Link, you know? Though yeah, this is something that varies with people, and others probably aren't so picky. But you're right, it's possible to do, but it's much harder to pull off.
Ahhh, that explains a lot, then! Thanks. c:
...Oh man, I don't know how I missed it, but that fic you mentioned earlier sounds squicky as hell, please share. I haven't seen a squicky badfic since the ZeldaBadfic LJ community went inactive.
For what it's worth, I'm prolly going to edit that post to specify what I'd like to see submitted.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, Rinku sorta summed it up perfectly. My own experiences with him... Yeah, started off nice and actually pretty sycophantic, then he just sprayed BS all over the place. 1200 words of BS. It was kinda impressive in a really douchey, perverse way.
I am glad to be of help, as little as I can.
ReplyDeleteWell, I can understand why some would not like to use the canons. ie. The fact they are afraid they would not be able to get in character. Frankly enough, I do this because I don't like Link (he is too much of a Sue in my eyes), so I try to use a more flawed OC to give a new spin to the Zelda formulas.
And cool Calmareye, I understand now what you mean. I should try to speak more to him
Well, I wanted to send the fic, but the author listened to my critique and she edited it, radically rewriting it. She has a long way to go, but the redux is nowhere as bad as the original ^^'' sorry
Yeah, that's understandable.
DeleteAhh... It's excellent that she was willing to listen to critique and fix it, but I admit a part of me is disappointed, too, haha. Thanks anyway!
