Character Sheet: Navi

Ryuu seems to have an Official Character or two under his belt--ones that weren't commandeered and altered into his own characters, anyway--including everyone's favorite fairy. A Link clone needs a fairy, I guess.

Name: Navi
Nick-Name: (none)
Gender: Female
Age: (unknown)

While I don't think it's necessary for characters to have nicknames, I'm kind of disappointed that he couldn't make one up for her, especially if he finds it necessary to add a 'nickname' slot onto his character sheets. Yeah, she's never called anything but 'Navi' or 'a fairy' in the game, but there's a lot about her that isn't revealed in the game, and a creative player could have fun filling in the gaps.

This goes for her "unknown" age, too. What, has no one thought to ask her how old she is? Does she not know how old she is? An official age is certainly unknown to any players, but that doesn't mean we can't make an assertion for the sake of her roleplaying character.

Height: Fairies are very small... quite hard to determine how tall they are

Take a guess. It can't be too hard.

Weight: Been said to be weightless

Nonsense. Nothing is weightless except certain hypothetical atomic particles and spectres. And shadows. Arguably, Navi, being a fairy, which have been shown in game to be able to touch and hit and manipulate things, is none of these. Even tiny creatures have weight, including dragonflies and fleas, and being able to fly doesn't mean she's weightless.

It may have been permissible to put something along the lines of "too small to bother with", or "the weight of a dragonfly", but "weightless" just ain't true.

Physical Description: Navi is a fairy and like all fairies, she appears to be a ball of light with transparent butterfly wings.

Hold up! Excuse me. Butterfly wings?

Here is a picture of Navi's official art:

Here is a picture of... well, it's Tatl, but you get the idea:

This is what a butterfly looks like:

Granted, butterflies come in variations, but they all tend to follow the general design of that first example: two pairs of short, rounded wings that overlap, big wing under little wing, into one massive "compound" wing. Transparent or not, Navi's wings don't resemble a butterfly wing enough to warrant it as a descriptor.

A better example of Navi's wings might be bee's wings.

Look! They're already transparent!

Of course, the best choice would probably be a damselfly:

And when you consider how contemporary people view fairy wings as dragonfly- or damselfly-like, this makes sense.

But I've gotten off-track a bit.

Her light is white, but has a blue hue to the edges.
Looks most Like: Navi - duh!

This is probably the best evidence that the "looks most like" slot is completely pointless for 99% of characters that aren't ripped whole cloth from established characters.

Personality: Navi is, in heart, a sweet fairy and has the best of intentions. However, she's not exactly always able to carry things out the best way. She's persistent to the point of where she may come off as annoying.

Yeah, it's so annoying when she tries to urge you to stop Ganon from eating the world and torturing Zelda while you're piddling your time away fishing. Heh. Heh heh. Heh heh uuugh...

In all seriousness, everyone is annoying to some degree, and it's good that he acknowledges this. However, this is the entirety of her personality description. While I understand that secondary characters aren't always going to get as much attention as primary characters, this is just pathetic, especially since he puts so much emphasis on detailed personalities and histories in other people's characters, as well as his own, with huge paragraphs packed with unnecessary adjectives and redundancies.

This is the perfect opportunity to round out Navi's character, beyond the limitations of the game, and it's been squandered. What are her hopes? Her fears? What makes her happy? What drives her? What gets her up in the morning? How does she react to anger or upset or fear?

Power(s): Unsure if this is a power, Navi seems to have extraordinary insight.
Upside to Power(s): Able to identify any monster or boss, as well as give useful hints about puzzles she's never even seen before.
Downside to Power(s): Sometimes, even her hints are limited.

I don't know if that could be considered a power, either. 'Power' in this context tends to imply some sort of magical or supernatural ability, rather than just a special talent, and "extraordinary insight" isn't necessarily a supernatural power. Of course, it might be. It's possible that Navi, upon seeing a new monster or situation, suddenly has information piped into her head through some mysterious database--or it could be that, like most everyone else, she can work out solutions to problems in novel situations, and her ability to fly (as well as being a small creature living in a dangerous forest with lots of predators) gives her a unique vantage point that terrestrial tetrapods--like, say, Link--don't have.

Tatl had this same ability, and often expressed frustration when Link (or the player) didn't immediately know the same things she did, so the implication is that this isn't something unusual, at least among fairies.

Then again, maybe Tatl's assumption was that everyone should have a mind like hers.

Strengths: Can light dark passageways, can fly and is hard to catch. She's a small target as well as evasive. She's nearly impossible to get rid of.
Weaknesses: Can't fight... at all.

Being a constant beacon might make stealth pretty hard, too. But, really, no complaints here. Being small in size definitely has its advantages and disadvantages, and the ones listed here are pretty legitimate ones.

History:
Her story is well known. She was sent by the Great Deku Tree to be Link's partner in his journey that would rescue Hyrule from the clutches of Ganon. Needless to say, whatever he had gone through, she was always right beside him.

However, the journey ended... all too soon for Navi. Once they returned to their normal point in time, she left Link. No one knows why, not even her. It was but a day of being alone did she begin regretting her hasty actions. Immediately she began looking for Link. He was no where to be found. Little did she know, he was looking for her.

Tragically, years have passed, and neither have found the other.

Again, this is pathetic. It's just a rehash of what anyone already knows, if they've played Ocarina of Time. There's nothing on what she did or where she came from before she was called by the Deku Tree, and nothing afterward. Did she sit in a hole and do nothing for her whole life, until the Deku Tree called her? Did the Deku Tree create her especially for the purpose of tagging along with Link? Did she do nothing afterward but search for Link, endlessly and unwaveringly?

A lot of what molds a person into who they are comes from their history, and there's absolutely nothing here. There's nothing that describes why Navi is sweet, yet persistent and buggy, or what her role is among other fairies, or the Kokiri, or anything. Was she an outcast, like Link? There isn't even an attempt at explaining why she left Link to being with. "Not even she knew why" smells like a cop out to me. Did the goddesses force her away?

Again, there's a lot of room here for play and diversity and depth, and it's been wasted.

Extra: She's still in hopes of finding Link again.

RPG Style: Zelda RP

So, she gave up on actively looking for him? Idungetit.

Overall, I'm giving this character sheet a 4/10. Yeah, it's Navi, and she didn't get a lot of development in the game, but there wasn't a lot of attempt to develop her here, either. There's nothing in here that anyone playing Ocarina of Time wouldn't already know, and as a result the character sheet is just a waste of time and bandwidth.

The reason why I'm giving it a four instead of a five is because Ryuu is working with the actual Navi, instead of some spin-off... but, unfortunately, it was a weak and half-hearted attempt at Navi. While Navi herself was already created to be a reasonable and decent character, none of that work was done by Ryuu.
